Abstract: Defects in helicase enzymes result in a number of diseases that mimic aspects of growing old. New work shows that a helicase implicated in one of these conditions--xeroderma pigmentosum (XP)--apparently helps hormones activate genes in addition to its well-known ability to unwind DNA. The protein's newly discovered role in hormone signaling might underlie unexplained XP symptoms.
