A Turn From the Worm

Human version of worm longevity protein shuts off rather than activates gene regulator

R. John Davenport

Abstract: Worms and humans don't share the same turn-ons, according to new work. A particular nematode age-retarding protein works by activating another longevity promoter, but scientists have now shown that the mammalian version instead shuts down the second molecule. This difference might reflect mammals' need to thwart cancer.
