Sci. Aging Knowl. Environ., 25 June 2003 OTHER RESOURCESLong-Lived C. elegans daf-2 Mutants Are Resistant to Bacterial PathogensDanielle A. Garsin, Jacinto M. Villanueva, Jakob Begun, Dennis H. Kim, Costi D. Sifri, Stephen B. Calderwood, Gary Ruvkun, and Frederick M. Ausubel http://sageke.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/sageke;2003/25/or9Abstract: Science 300, 1921 (2003). Aging is known to be associated with an increased susceptibility to infectious disease. The insulin/insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) signaling pathway has been shown to affect the rate of aging in a number of organisms. In this Brevia, Garsin et al. show that insulin/IGF-1 signaling influences Caenorhabditis elegans resistance to bacteria, such that long-lived worms are slow to succumb to infection. These results suggest that enhanced immunity is a feature of genetically determined longevity.
