Sci. Aging Knowl. Environ., 19 November 2003 OTHER RESOURCESInflammatory Blockade Restores Adult Hippocampal NeurogenesisMichelle L. Monje, Hiroki Toda, and Theo D. Palmer http://sageke.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/sageke;2003/46/or25Abstract: Science 13 November 2003 (10.1126/science.1088417) (Science Express Reports) Cranial radiation therapy causes a progressive decline in cognitive function that is linked to impaired neurogenesis. Chronic inflammation accompanies radiation injury, suggesting that inflammatory processes may contribute to neural stem cell dysfunction. Here, we show that neuroinflammation alone inhibits neurogenesis and that inflammatory blockade with indomethacin, a common nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, restores neurogenesis following endotoxin-induced inflammation and augments neurogenesis following cranial irradiation.
